It's important for everyone, no matter their age, to regularly see a dentist. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 87% of kids saw a dentist in 2021. If you're one of the many parents prepping to take your child for their first cleaning, they might ask you what kind of equipment is in a dentist's office. Here are some of the most common ones.
These machines are one of the most common sights in a dentist's office. Each exam room will have its own machine set up. Usually, a dentist takes X-rays once a year. That way, they're able to track the growth and development of your child's smile. Definitely let your child know about the lead apron they'll wear as it'll protect them. These days, many X-rays are completely digital and get sent to a computer. No more having to wait for them to be developed and put on a light board.
This is where you will have your child's dental work done. Help them to get comfortable in the reclining chair. They can relax before the dentist arrives. That way, they're calm before the procedure even begins.
There will be a water rinse bowl next to the chair, usually on the left, and a tray on the right that has all the necessary equipment. The tools include an electric scraper, a manual scraper, cotton gauze to clean up any bleeding, and a suction to keep their mouth dry the entire time. They will also have topical anesthetic nearby to apply if you want to have their gums numbed beforehand.
These are the basics that you and your child will see in a dentist's office. They will have other things like drills, dental fillings, Novocain, temporary dental crowns, and tooth extraction equipment, too, but those tend to be for special situations. For a regular dental exam and cleaning, you won't have to worry about any of that. For both kids and adults, most dentists provide a goody bag with a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss in it. From then on, make sure to take great care of your child's teeth for six months until your next visit.
